Why it’s time to make your skills work for you

With all the talk of back to school, what does it mean for you. If you have children starting primary school, moving on to secondary and/or off to university, will you have more time on your hands? If you don’t have children, what do you need to learn to take your career and life to the next level?

Mid-career and at the start of the academic year is an opportunity for you to inject more passion, purpose and prosperity into your working life. Starting up a side business along-side your day job is a great way to do it. Seasoned professional women need to make starting up a business their business; and here are three key reasons why:

1.       Passion – With the retirement age now at 70, let’s face it, it will increase how will you sustain the 20/30 years left in your career? Doing something that you enjoy and lights you up now will give you the impetus to keep going. When that season requires stepping up to the next level or comes to end to make room for something new, you’d have learnt the skills on how to innovate and reinvent yourself.  So, what interest, hobby, skill or cause could you start-up today?

2.       Purpose – With 20 or 30 years of work under your belt the big ‘L’ may start to rear its head. Yes, the word ‘legacy’. When you look back on your life what do you want to be remembered for? Mid-career is a time when people start questioning their career choices and if it is possible to make a career change. However, with the responsibility of young children, kidults, partners and/or caring for elderly parents a side business gives you the opportunity to dip your toes into  something new or up-level your career without drastically disrupting your familial and other responsibilities.

3.       Prosperity – With some women taking time out to get pregnant, stay pregnant and/or take maternity leave the loss of earnings and pension contributions can put women on the financial back foot. The cost of childcare results in some coming out of the job market; while the primary school years may lead some to work part-time and/or take jobs below their qualifications to be able to do the school run and homework. Irrespective of whether you have children or not the gender and/or ethnicity pay gap means that women need to think of innovative ways to increase their income now and in the future. Starting a side business gives you the opportunity to increase your income and meet your present commitments ; whilst building a runway to working part or full time  in your business in your 60’s and 70’s in a way that empowers you to work smarter and not harder.  So, what could you start up today for the life you want tomorrow?
