I have started how will I finish? Starting your business journey online

Covid-19 has forced many people to ‘get with the tech’ if they are to work from home and/or stay socially connected with others. However, for small business owners learning and developing digital skills is part of being an entrepreneur.

Some new and mature business owners will have a social media presence but stop short of having a professional business website because they do not know where to start, don’t see themselves a techie person and/or feel overwhelmed by the time it would take to create a website. By breaking the jobs into bitesize manageable tasks creating a website is easier than you think.

The first step is to decide on a web hosting provider. There are lots to choose from. Although when starting out the affordability of the monthly or annual fee to host your website will be a consideration, also bear in mind whether the provider is a good fit for the type of website you want e.g. blog, ecommerce, portfolio or general business website. Bluehost is a web hosting provider that is good for WordPress. While Fasthosts allows you to host, build and register the domain name of your website all in one place.

Once you have decided who will host your website think carefully on what your web address (domain name) will be for your business. For once you register your domain name you can’t change it. Test a few ideas on google search to see what comes up. .UK .COM endings are very popular, practical and professional. However, if the domain name you want is taken you can also choose from .ORG .NET .BIZ .LONDON and more. Do your research and choose a name that reflects you and/or your business. Your goal is to make it easy for people to find your business on google search. So, keep your web address short and simple with no symbols.
