Dealing with Disappointment and Despair: The Ups and Downs of Entrepreneurship during Coronavirus

With parts of the UK in full or semi lockdown; people who have gone on holiday abroad now being told to quarantine; and some  businesses that were poised to open have now been delayed, these government directives although needed to manage coronavirus and prevent a second wave, has come as a crashing blow to the self-employed and those in business.

One of the reasons people cite as to why they set up their own businesses is to have more social and economic control over their lives. However, what this pandemic has shown is that it is hard to be the  captain of your own ship at a time like this.

Business owners have  openly shared their despair as to how they will be able to keep their business and themselves afloat when announcements can’t give them the time to socially, emotionally and financially prepare for the worst.  However, the very nature of the virus and the need for it to be monitored on a daily, sometimes hourly basis makes it challenging in-itself to have a ‘fully warned, fully armed’ communications strategy. What this has shown is that coronavirus has not only disrupted the economy, it has also deeply affected the mental health of the nation. Getting through it is more than just a money game.

Looking after your mental health and wellbeing is paramount during these difficult and turbulent times. As the new normal unfolds with many twists and turns leaving people to grapple with ‘what they don’t know, they don’t know’ this could have a negative impact on themselves,  families and friends.  Therefore, now more than ever reaching out to organisations, getting advice and support from professionals in this arena is of critical importance.
